When you’re shopping online this Cyber Monday, look for the closed padlock symbol on your computer screen before you give out any of your personal information. This symbol assures you that the site you’re on is secure. You can also watch for https to appear in the URL (web address) when you go to checkout. The ‘s’ also denotes that your site is secure. If you don’t see these symbols, find your gifts at another site.

"Who can you bare your soul to without fear? Who makes you laugh? Who stimulates thought? Who is amazingly generous? Who do you like to be with? These people help you grow socially and emotionally. Do they know how important they are to you? Call them, do something with them, or write them a letter. Keep these colorful people present in your everyday life."—Stephen R. Covey, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, pages 297–99

The biggest shopping day of the year is almost upon us.
Will you be one of the thousands (maybe even millions) of shoppers hitting the stores as early as 5am to get your hands on spectacular deals before they’re all gone? Regardless of whether you’re one of the hardy souls who plan to be out there early or one who plans to take it all a bit more slowly, if you follow these basic tips, you’ll stretch your dollars further on Black Friday (or if you’re shopping from your computer, on Cyber Monday).
1. Start with a List and a Budget
Know what you can spend before you start shopping. Do not, we repeat, do not walk out the door to go shopping without having taken this step. Allot a specific dollar amount that you can spend on a gift for each person. If you’re budget is tight this year, don’t forget to include dollars you may have sitting on unused or half-used gift cards. Credit card points are another source of hidden ‘dollars.’
2. Brainstorm and Research
Don’t give someone the gift YOU want to receive. Take the time to figure out what THEY want to receive (within your budget constraints, of course). This is the really fun part. Take a few moments to put yourself in the shoes of the other person.
If you’re feeling ’stuck’ log on to retailer’s websites, grab the stack of catalogs that has been accumulating in your mailbox, peruse the circular ads in your most recent newspaper, and search for gift guides online from bloggers you love. Have fun, let your mind go! The beauty of the internet is that it’s so easy to get ideas and make sure those ideas are in the right price range.
3. Research Deals
Once you have your list, then go to a comparison shopping websites. See quickly what stores are carrying the items you want for the lowest price.
Please, please beware of deals that are advertised as “limited quantities.” That could mean that there are as few as 1 or 2 items at that price in each store. For example, CNNMoney.com reported that while Sears has not officially revealed its Black Friday sales, the company confirmed that two of its post-Thanksgiving deals include a Samsung 40-inch 1080p LCD HDTV for $599.99, “Only while quantities last, minimum three per store, no rainchecks.” That means if you’re not first, second or third in line on Friday morning, you probably won’t be getting that deal. Read the fine print and plan accordingly. No gift is worth getting hurt over in a stampede.
If you want to skip the research and wing it. Download a nifty little iPhone App for free called SnapTell. It uses the camera feature of the iPhone to snap pictures of any book, CDs or video game and within seconds gives you a rating, description and links to sites like Google, YouTube, Wikipedia, IMDB, eBay, Barnes & Noble and more. That makes it very easy to comparison shop on the fly, something virtually impossible to do before.
4. Make a Plan for Black Friday
The last thing you want to do is be running around like a chicken without a head and ending up with little to show for your efforts. Take your gift list and group the gifts by store. Identify which retailer you must hit early to take advantage of the big sales, and from there plan the rest of your excursions in a way that will be most efficient from a time and gas standpoint.
Above all – don’t stress about finding the ‘perfect’ deal. First of all, there will always be another deal on something juicy down the line. Secondly, the holidays aren’t about any one thing, but rather the joy of remembering those you love with tokens of your affection. It’s not the token that matters so much, but the affection with which it is given.
Happy bargain hunting!
Thanks Alicia and Sarah! Did you enjoy this article? Give it a cheer!

If you are expecting a crowd of young children for Thanksgiving dinner, consider giving them their own table where they can enjoy the company of others their age. Make sure the kids’ table is in a safe place that is easy to clean later.

Taking time to organize before you travel will help you stay calm and in control when you’re on the go. Here are just a few tips to help you travel organized this holiday season.
Make a list. Before you begin packing for your trip, make a list of items you need to pack. Check the items off your list as you pack them so you’re certain not to forget anything essential.
Use gift cards. To help you travel light, consider giving gift cards and certificates instead of bulky gifts. They're quick to buy, require less luggage space, and are available for everything from movies to massages. With gift cards, your loved ones are sure to find a great gift they can enjoy, and you’ll have a much easier trip.
Consider shopping online. Shopping online is a great way to reduce travel hassles. You can find most of your holiday gifts right at your computer, and often you can have them gift wrapped and delivered directly to your recipient’s home.
Ship your gifts early. If you have special gifts for friends and family, consider shipping them ahead of time so they arrive before you do. Your travel experience will be much easier if you aren’t lugging a suitcase full of gifts everywhere you go.
Insure your packages. For a few dollars more, you can ensure your packages when you ship them. Insuring your packages gives you peace of mind, knowing you’ll be able to recover money if they’re lost or damaged. Shipping providers would rather not pay that fee and they pay special attention to packages that are insured.
Pack travel snacks. Fun snacks can make your travel more enjoyable and keep your children content along the way. Snacks high in protein such as nuts, peanut butter, cheese, or beef jerky tend to curb your hunger longer than empty calories. Snacks especially come in handy when you’re flying. You never know when your flight will be delayed on the runway or before you board. Plus, airport food can be expensive.
Pack essentials in your carry-on. Keep essentials such as medications, books, word games, and snacks in your carry-on so you can stay calm in your flight and avoid boredom at 30,000 feet. You’ll also want to pack underwear, deodorant, small containers of shower supplies, and perhaps a change of clothes, just in case your checked luggage doesn’t land where you do.
These are only a few ideas to keep you sane during this busy travel season. What works for you?

Hi Angela, we can’t wait to hear what your picks are for this holiday season. Before we get started, what are your favorite things about the holidays?
I love to have parties with friends and family with lots of fabulous food!
Sounds fun! Also, this time of year tends to get pretty busy, how do you stay organized during the holidays?
I make lists in my planner for everything. I have a list of gift ideas in my planner- whenever I think, “Oh that would be a great gift!” I write it down. Then I start shopping early, so I have one less thing to worry about. I also try to always have extra gifts on hand. And I make lists for parties, which include invites, food, recipes, etc., so I have all party tasks written down, and it’s easier to complete.
And, anytime a new party request comes up, I immediately add it to my planning calendar, so I’m always aware of my availability.
Great! So, share with us some of your favorite holiday picks. First, what is the hottest trend in totes, binders and accessories for the holiday?
The hottest trend for the holidays is anything in silver hues. Silver and gray are the new black for this season. It adds a bit of color while still being classic. You will see it in the all kinds of apparel and shoes. And at FranklinCovey we feature it in our new Jean Chatzky leather collection.
I know it’s difficult for people to find the perfect gift for family and friends- especially during the holidays. What is your favorite holiday item to gift to men, and your favorite holiday gift idea for women, and why?
I definitely love to find the perfect gift for friends and family during the holidays. Luckily, we have a lot to choose from.
For men, a wallet is always a great gift. Any man can use a new updated leather wallet. My favorite is the Tri-fold Wallet in black.
It also comes in brown, and we have a Bi-fold Wallet in fabulous leather.
For women, I’m loving our Phoebe Damask wire-bound and ring-bound cover.
Not only is it affordable, it’s long-lasting because it has a coated canvas covering. Also, the pattern just looks and feels holiday-ish to me.
We’ve already talked a lot about great individual pieces from FranklinCovey, but what about your favorite holiday collection?
I actually love the new Jean Chatzky leather collection, in fact, it’s the collection I’m currently carrying. The pebbled leather is so rich, and we chose in-season colors like silver, pink and brown.
The collection features a classic tote packed with functionality-, tons of interior and exterior pockets, a matching wristlet, and a zip-top closure.
The binder is an elegant style with the same great leather.
Plus, the accessories are so fashionable! They feature a silver buckle as an accent.
My favorite accessory is the Tabbed Wallet- it’s cute, but also very practical.
Let’s focus on just the men for a minute. If you could splurge on one gift for men, what would it be and why?
I’d definitely pick the new Trevi Collection for men; it is made with the finest Italian leather. Also, the shape of the bag is very modern but still has a rustic feel. The quality and craftsmanship of this bag is also found in top designers’ bags.
With Trevi, we were able to give our male customers a great quality case with all the designer features, just as we do with our women’s cases.
Thanks, Angela! Do you have a product question for Angela? If so, comment below, or email go@franklincoveyproducts.com.
